Why Have A Phone But Never Pick It Up ?

Posted by Huge on 2nd March 2010

Alright this is just one of those subject that don’t apply to everyone, but you’ll probably end up in this situation at some point. Mobile phones are used for mobile telecommunication (assisted transmission of signals over a distance for the purpose of communication to or from a mobile device). However some people just seem to missed the purpose for this technology, mobile phones to some people are not for the purpose of communication but are an accessory. It’s become a fashion statement, it’s something that is used just to show and in some circumstance give an illusion of having a high social status.

Now the reason I wanted to write this blog is because, today when I left my Graphics lesson to go to lunch i tried to call my friend who did not pick up her phone. I have a free lesson after lunch that i thought would be very brilliant to use for filming some Media work, however i could not get a hold of her. So i tried another friend, she did not pick up/text back either and another, and another. Non of them picked up but one texted back and this make me think why have a mobile phones but never actually using it when it’s needed ? Or having a phone but never picking up just using it as gaming device, camera, entertainment etc.

Yes a mobile phone is not only build for calling but also have additional services, and accessories, such as SMS for text messaging, email, packet switching for access to the Internet, gaming, Bluetooth, infrared, camera with video recorder and MMS for sending and receiving photos and video, MP3 player, radio and GPS. However those are only accessories to the main function of the mobile phone, which is to allow you to communicated wirelessly where ever you go ( within the coverage distance ). No one seems to be using it only for this purpose anymore.

Having a mobile phone myself I know that me personally I only use it mainly for calling, texting and emailing (communication). So I think that people to have fancy looking phone that have 1.7GHz processor, or a multi touch function on their touch screen , or an App that can tell them what the cat is saying needs to know the real purpose of having this device. But not to have it only so they can say “Look at this awesome App I got” or ” Look my phone is faster than your computer.” I want it to be use as a mobile telecommunication device not a fashion statement. This way when someone really needs you they can get a hold of you, rather than panicking over the fact that they need to do the work but doesn’t have the people they need to do the work with there.

V&A Childhood Museum And LC-A Instant Back+

Posted by Huge on 2nd March 2010

I think my Graphics teacher hates me. Reason for that:

I don’t like kids ! Not like i hate them, but well it’s more like I’m scared of children. Yes I’m not so far from a children myself being 17 but I’m talking of the really young children. I don’t like them because 1: I’m afraid I’m going to make them cry & 2: I don’t know what to do when they come up to you, being the youngest in my family I haven’t had a little brother/sister to looked after. Now to why I think my graphic teacher hates me, I say she hates me i don’t literally mean that she “hates” me. I have a pretty solid idea that she knows I don’t like children, yet we have came to a decision to do my exam work on Toys. Which the idea of doing it on Toys, to me, sounds like a great fun. However this will mean I would have to spend a great amount of time either, go to places that sells toys (this usually involve kids) or visit children’s museums.

V&A Childhood Museum is the first place that came to her mind. Yes it’s “Childhood” Museum, of course that place is going to be full of kids. But i gave it a go. I went there on the Wednesday 24th (the day LC-A Instant back+ was launch) the museum itself is very nice and simple, literally just toys in a glass cupboard in some sort of a massive warehouse. However there is this big piece of Art work at the entrance that caught my eyes. It was a “bridge/rainbow thingy/some sort of a shelter/who knows what” made from just wooden chairs !

[Look at the little devils running towards me.... "arrgghhhh"]

This was amazing as you can see, not the most exciting thing but I just wasn’t expecting something like this in a museum that sounds quite boring. It not only the chair that amazed me at this museum, the boring toys i was there to take photos of were not as boring as I thought. The toys were not just old teddy bears and wooden cars, there were all sort of toys thing like game console to collectibles. If you don’t know this I am a bit of a Star Wars fan and have a massive collection of unopened action figure from Star Wars, back home in Thailand. So seeing them was nice, also things like the Play Station 1 (the original one) brings back memories of when I’ve played those old games with my brother whom I haven’t seen in a while.

Conclusion: if you have free time why not visit this place, it might be a little far(ish) if you live in Central London. It only took me about 35-45 minutes to get there and I say that’s not bad. It’ll bring back memories when you look at those old toys if you do see ones that you’ve had in the pass like I did.

Another thing that I should mention is their cafe looked very good. I didn’t have time to see it because I was rushing to go to the Lomo Store to get the brand spanking new LC-A Instant Back+ & The “No Nukes” LC-A+. Which by the way is an amazing addition to the LC-A, as amazing as the Diana Instant back is, it’s nowhere near the result you’ll get with the LC-A Instant Back+. With its signature vignetting and the crystal clear images (with a Tunnel Vision like effect ) made by it’s glass lens still included in the instant photos that comes out, its a “must have” for LC-A owners. I really do highly recommend this LC-A Instant Back+ !

[Just see what I mean when I say it's a "must have"]

Give it a go…..

These days Analogue or film cameras are not really being used as much as in the past, this is a big mistake ! Because when you use a Digital camera not only most of the time your letting the camera do all the tricky adjustment for you, but you also just looking at what you’ve just taken if you don’t like you re-take it. This make you less involved with the photography aspect itself, you end up just taking an image rather than capturing the moment. the wonderful Lomography Society is one of the many groups trying to keep Analogue alive and this is one of the 100s of reasons why i love Lomography.

Lomography cameras are simple, low tech and easy to experiment with. Why not go out and try some maybe put a filter in between the Lens and the film. Maybe find a sheet of plastic cut a bit out and draw a patten on top before putting it in the camera. Give it a try do what you want with it. As i discovered its great fun and you can really get some good affects with it.
